Pink Agnes Reserve is made exclusively with estate Pink Champagne Currants hand harvested from our Rochester Hills Orchard. With natural notes of lemon zest and gooseberry, this mead perfectly balances the florality of orange blossom honey with the tart acidity of pink champagne currants. Only 39 bottles of this mead were produced.

Our sweet black currant mead, Black Agnes, is named after one boisterous Scottish wench who successfully defended the Scottish Castle of Dunbar during a five-month siege by William Montague, the Earl of Salisbury. While relatively unknown in the United States, black currants have been grown in the British Isles for more than five hundred years, and used by herbalists since the Middle Ages. Sharply tart and acidic, the potent flavors of the fruit are perfectly balanced by the sweetness of premium honey to create a particularly unique, memorable and delicious mead.

This batch of The Heart of Darkness, RH23, is a new expression of our most sought-after mead. For the first time, this release is made exclusively with fruit from our Rochester Hills orchard — a property we purchased and began cultivating in 2018. This shift in growing location brings a subtle but meaningful change to the mead’s profile, shaped by new soil, microclimate, and farming conditions — what winemakers and growers refer to as terroir.

Previous batches of The Heart of Darkness were made with fruit from the Schramm family homestead in Troy, Michigan. Batch RH23 preserves the same core fruit — Schaerbeek cherries, Crandall and Consort black currants, and Heritage and Latham raspberries — but reflects a new terroir. It’s a continuation of our tradition, now shaped by a different place. We’re excited to share this evolution with you.

The Heart of Darkness is our capstone mead, made from hand-harvested estate fruit grown by the Schramm’s. The cherries are of the Schaarbeek variety, an intensely flavorful, European Morello type. The raspberries are Heritage and Latham, grown in Michigan by the Schramm family for three generations, and the black currants are Crandall and Consort. Production is extremely limited, as the amount of care and labor which go into each batch is substantial. This mead is the finest representation of our core commitments to fidelity and quality of ingredients. It pours a deep purple in color, has a dense fruitiness and a mid-palate with considerable tartness and a lingering, balanced finish. Your empty glass will be redolent of the honey component. The Heart of Darkness pairs well with grilled red meats, high quality dark chocolate, and blue cheeses.

The Navaho blackberry is an award-winning varietal developed by the esteemed University of Arkansas Agriculture Division. While some blackberries like the Marionberry are graceful and elegant, the Navajo is boisterous. Growing large, exceptionally sweet and flavorful fruit on thornless canes, it proudly announces its power — displaying rich, bold fruit character and elevated tannins on the palate. This mead will pair well with dry-aged beef, hard cheeses, and high-quality gins.

Crandalls are a rare and unique variety of black currant known for being both unusually large and fragrant. Part of the Heart of Darkness blend, in Crandall Reserve these clove scented berries are featured alone. One hundred percent of this fruit is estate grown — hand-picked by members of the Schramm family at perfect ripeness during the hottest days of the summer, washed, culled, and de-stemmed by hand, and fermented in small batches.
